space camp. was born over some beers with creatives from design shops across the world and trying to one-up each other’s client stories. Speaking about the struggles that often plague creative shops like clients that don’t seem to respect the creative process, unrealistic expectations, and an overall mess of micromanagement it became clear to me that these are universal problems most agencies have, no matter their experience level. They’re all passionate about what they do but feel this passion is often attacked by client requests.

So, what can we do about it?

space camp. is the execution of a simple idea: create a culture of empathy with agile processes that focus on solving client pain instead of production. It’s obvious but it’s an idea that still eludes much of the creative industry and, really, any company that sells anything. Ask yourself - when is the last time you spoke with a customer service rep and felt delighted? Felt heard?

Now think of the last time you dealt with a tough client. Did they feel delighted after your call? Did they feel heard?

Change the culture of creatives vs. clients.

I start by auditing the production process of agencies starting with Sales. I look at how teams communicate with each other and with external stakeholders. I learn about the mission, vision, and values of companies and asses whether these are just trendy catch phrases plastered on a wall or if it’s an actual belief system for the team. You’ve got beer on tap and bring your dog to work days? Dope, but how does this actually help your team be more fulfilled?

Great teams don’t need perks like free beer - they need a process that empowers them to challenge each other and their partners; your clients. This platforms fuels growth, happy creatives, and clients that will shift their views of your team as a production shop to a creative partner.
